What does it mean if a girl gives you her hair clip?

Yesterday my crush gave me her hair clip, well not directly she gave it to a popular boy who then gave it to me saying it was from her. I have a crush on her but we haven't spoken as she is obviously very shy. People are saying just ask her out already (popular people) however other people are saying it's just a prank ur gonna embarrass urself. I don't know what to believe. What do I do!!!
