Why do 99% of women think they are the top 1%?

Bit of an exaggeration but there's probably two strong reasons that would contribute.

1. Validation is readily available for most women. While men count compliments per year, women can count them per week.

2. Most women can get with the top 1%-5% of men. If makes sense to assume that if that is in your dating pool, you'd also be part of the same group.

I was part of that industry in Vegas for over a decade serving as head of marketing and promotions for some of the top strip clubs in the world. I spent a lot of time negotiating w/ our high end clientele, and why they may have had favorites non of them were delusiomal enough to believe the woman are interested in them. They understand that the woman are simply a product to be consumed for entertainment. Strippers are a dime a dozen, and are the least valuable worker in the company. In fact most strippers are independent contractors who rent pole time from the venue, so what happens is women like yourself are forced to bait and hustle to make rent, and they get attached to the clients because it's competitive. A lot of guys will take advantage of making you guys feel like their really interested in you so you will give them extra attention. If men were more delusional they wouldn't go to strip clubs at all.
