If I do not know someone I do not allow them to take my picture. That being said, i am not against my picture being posted online or in paper magazine etc. Taking a picture with me is a much better way to grab a photo with me...
I would say just friendly. I take pics of my work friends all the time. We love making memories and sending them to our group chat. Maybe take pics of your other friends while he is around then take his so it looks like you’re taking pics of all of your friends. Every situation is different though.
