The secret for a gift is to observe that particular person, and then try to find out something that he really likes, but that he would never buy for himself.

Example:
A friend of mine loves music. I noticed that he has a nice audio installation at home. But I noticed he doesn't have headphones. So I gave him a headphone as a gift.
He was super happy with it, because he never would have bought it for himself. But I knew that this was something he'd like.

So figure out what the person likes but would never buy for him/herself and that'll be the perfect gift.
Just don't make it too expensive otherwise it will feel awkward for the both of u.
