Why do some people think it’s cute and somewhat proud of behaving petty or toxic?

Not going to do it here myself, but here is my reason for behaving petty and toxic... it makes me laugh. It's basically self-entertainment. Nobody else laughs... it doesn't matter. I will find it hilarious for years.

Other people might be different but that is my reason... I'm just entertaining myself.

It's kind of good when they do do that because to them unknown what they're doing is they're telling you exactly who they are and when they do something like that you just kind of got to smile and say see ya. . Or at least that's what I do because I don't like people like that

Terrific question. They do take a kind of pride in stirring up drama or being a pestilence on the earth. I kinda think Hollywood is a little bit to blame, because they've often portrayed rivalries in TV and movies that give the appearance of being glamorous i. e. Mean Girls, Desperate Housewives, Disney kid shows, etc. So I think that's why people see it the way you described it. Really good question. Damn.

They are probably in their little echo chamber of portraying "individualism at the highest level", which of course is rather the lowest level. I guess we can also assume some teachings from certain internet subcultures behind it.
