It's because women are more likely to be liberal. Naturally, you don't see how that's related, but hear me out:

Up until the mid-2000's, we had competing waves of vampire and zombie movies. And they'd alternate on which was more popular (and did better at the box office), but they wouldn't trade off on years or studio cycles, but on political administrations (which in turn accompanied shifts in the ideological zeitgeist.

Zombies movies rose during liberal times, and it's not hard to see why: the bland, conformist, unthinkingly consuming horde, conscious of nothing but their own appetites and the mindless satiation thereof. No logic, no emotion, just instinctive stimulus-response. It's not hard to see the stereotypical Democrat boogeyman in that.

Vampires dominated during conservative times, and a glance back at their progenitors will show why: Dracula, Ruthven, and Carmilla were all foreign aristocrats, coming to the shores of normal "good people", bringing with them a wanton disregard for not only the life and health of their victims, but their culture and values as well, being sexually libertine and interpersonally domineering and destructive (Varney was a little different, but sadly, no one remembers Varney except me and that one Marvel comics writer). A Republican boogeyman, in a neat little nutshell.
