I gather that you are the kind of person that does not say "hi" to others and that you are just doing what you are without saying a word to others.

Saying "hi" is a polite way to address a person.

I say "hi" to people about 200 times a day and nobody ever asked me why I say it. It is part of my character to greet people that I know and even strangers like kids or other women.
