Its called Hypergamy. In a nutshell, women are still wired for survival. Having another mate in mind ensures a woman's survival if something happens to her current partner. And while we are no longer cavemen, both men and women still operate primitively in a lot of ways such as this. That being said, this isn't true about all women, just like men that would rather impregnate multiple different women isn't true of all men. It's simply behavior that we are still evolving from as a species.

No, I've never met anyone who's said anything like this as far as I remember and I don't think this way myself. Not sure how exactly this research was done, what demographic (s) it surveyed etc, or even how the research defined the idea of a "back-up" so I'm not sure how much I trust that statistic as it's being portrayed nor am I sure how it could be explained based on my own experiences.
