In times past, "being a lady" came with a set of strict rules one had to follow in order to be considered respectable, of quality, marriageable, and an honor to your family. Although there were some rules for men, none were so strict as those imposed on young women. To break these societal rules, meant you could be cast out from your family or your family could be black-listed. It was less formal, the lower down the economic ladder you were, but there were still sets of societal rules that were largely designed to box women in to this idea that there was only the one way to exist and that conformity was a must.

In 2024, what does "being a lady" mean to you? Do you still think there are rules that exist that clearly define this or is this all a thing of the past? If you have a daughter, do you instruct them on some set of rules you think they should follow?

There are still rules, like it or not. No one would describe a loud, rude woman who ignores basic civility and hygiene as a lady.

I think the point of the rules is to cultivate habits for how to respond in difficult scenarios with grace and tact. If a service person is rude, a lady can deescalate the situation and obtain a better outcome using the right techniques. If a lady were taken hostage, her skills could allow her to keep a cool head in a high-stakes scenario. I'm the last person in the world to say women should be kept in "their place", but some of the protocols have value. While I can see how the rules could be interpreted as being controlling and restrictive, I have personally experienced the value of utilizing them in an advantageous way.

The word is just a synonym for woman/girl/gal/ma'am/madam/miss. It is usually said to one who is older than you the way ma'am/madam is, being the female version is mister/sir, which is used in the same context.

It used to mean the female version of a lord or the wife of a lord, in the context of a landlord. Which, at the time, meant they simply owned land and had nothing to do with renting an apartment from them. But because anyone can own land today, its not used that way as a synonym for royalty anymore.

Today its just you go to the store when you're a kid, and the shop owner gives you a freebie for buying stuff, and you're like "thanks lady" and leave.

Its a word you kind of stop using as an adult, usually getting replaced by miss (or just the woman's name), like how adults don't usually say mommy or daddy and just shorten it to mom or dad or say mother or father (there is no logical reason for this mind you, but its in the culture).

Anyway I don’t expect you to ever fully understand what it’s like to be an average man. That’s impossible. And I am talking about how it would be for your exact male counterpart (equal on looks, money, intelligence, personality). But again you took a very bad mental short cut assuming there are “no rules” for men.  I encourage you to watch Norah Vincent’s “Self Made Man”. It’s not political (came out in 2006). But this was mind blowing. Norah thought she already understood what life was like for men. Then she experienced it herself and discovered she couldn’t be any more mistaken (she’s not trans this was an experiment).  But I encourage you to watch this and I am not saying that to chastise you either. You won’t regret it.

To me being a lady means having respect for yourself, putting a value on yourself as a woman, and not allowing others to change you in any way that would make you feel any less of yourself. In turn, it also means you respect others, and treat them in those ways as well. You don’t demean them in any way, and you don’t offend them purposely.
With my own daughters I would just tell them to be mindful of others’ feelings as they grew. I also warned them to be careful with strangers in this age where you could easily get hurt by dangers, etc. they didn’t always listen but I thank God nothing dangerous happened to them and that they had good friends (and boyfriends).
So different from the past years where being a lady meant you couldn’t dress certain ways, act differently, smoke, drink and so on. I accidentally found out one my daughters smoked while in college. Many of the others said what a lady was. Unfortunately it's a dying aspect in western society. Many women are more interested in dressing & acting cheap thinking it empowers them when it just makes them look trashy.

But I want to address something you said that's flawed.

There were rules for men. There ARE rules for men. It's what separates men who were and will be successful with girlfriends / wives that are classy and lady-like. From men who'll only ever role around in the gutter with want-be-prostitutes half the city rode.

-sexual purity (sex only with husband and no premarital sex)

-no drinking or smoking

-dressing modestly (those lehengas and sarees with crop tops are considered “modest” but western crop tops not)

It’s 2024 so luckily a lot of the archaic crap has changed. For me, it is about being polite to others no matter if they are shop staff, waiters etc, just be polite and treat people correctly. Then it is to be your own person, to live your own life and not get forced into things by how society says someone must be. They should very much pursue their own education in subjects they like and a career path they want, then enjoy working and growing as a person. To me, a lady is a woman who is refined in her manner and behavior, rather than crude and vulgar. This includes the way she speaks, acts, and dresses. It might even be more important today because of how much access to attention and validation women have now. If they can resist and find and remain dedicated to one man, and treat him with respect, that is truly a quality woman.
