Why do girls always sit on each other’s lap even when there’s plenty seats around? not only on girls lap they sit on guys laps who are close?

I am a guy of 22 years, I have a lot of female friends who are of the similar age group. I have observed that, many of them have a habit of sitting on each other’s lap every now and then. They don’t only sit on female friends lap, at times they sit on few of their male friend’s lap too (including me) but only who are close to them. It first happened when we all went to a pub and due to some chair shortage, one of my female friends came and sat on my lap without slightest of hesitation. I felt really awkward as it was a public space. However now I am used to it. Everywhere, in college canteen, classroom or in the cars they sit on each other’s lap. Few days ago me and my friends decided to hit the club, one of my senior friend (female 25y) decided to join us, the car was crammed inside with 6 boys and she insisted on sitting on my lap the whole ride and during the ride when I asked her she jokingly said it’s their way to tease and embarrass me.
And pls don’t be judgmental, if I ask Is it common for you girls to sit on each other’s laps? and why?

From the pictures on your post, this must be the case mostly in India and not really anywhere else.

In the Western world, mainly in USA or Canada, this would cause quite some issues with potential sexual harassment and the associated legal claims resulting from such an act.

In one of the picture, a man is placing his hand over the hips of that girl. Just imagine the scandal in the US is such a photo would be published.

The guy would end up in jail for sexually assaulting the girl and because of such risks, not many people actually do that in North America.

I used to frequently go out with groups of girls to bars. There was a girl in one of my groups that would always sit on my lap that i had a huge crush on. Her along with several others had boyfriends but i never met any of them. I did like her sitting on my lap though.

This is a normal habit in cultures that generally don't have a sufficient number of seating. In more developed areas, the issue isn't one. Try and travel a little and see it for yourself.
