From a personal point of view, at least I can judge that he likes you. I'm not saying he has a crush on you, but there always might be the possibility! I myself for example had the same way of interacting with a girl in my university class and we've become very close friends by now. Of course, the only way you'll find out is to go up to him and start talking!

Yes that's what I mean, you two hardly know each other but he noticed you looking a few times and that you think he looks good and he thinks you do too otherwise he wouldn't smile
