Why did he call me "baby"?

I was talking to a guy (through text) and I said I almost fell asleep because I woke up pretty early (I forgot to turn my alarm off, yay). He just replied saying "Baby" and said he meant it in the nice way, he also seemed kind of shy about it. I know he wasn't calling me a baby for almost falling asleep, but I usually only see guys calling their girlfriends that. I know he likes me but he's never used a name like that before. I'm just wondering why he said it in the first place. We can't really date for a few reasons so I'm not sure if it could be that he wants to be in a relationship or not.

I don't know if he could be falling in love... he's 4 years older than me and I'm not sure how much he likes me, but I certainly know he does. Do you think a guy can get possessive (not necessarily in a bad way) over someone before they are in a relationship? I haven't ever experienced this so I'm not sure.

No i don't think that but what I know is that it doesn't matter the age it should matter on how you treat each other and if you are being treated as a princess then that man loves you but if not then that needs to be fixed cause every girl should be treated like a princess... also when a guy sees what he wants he goes for it and never gives up

Alright, thank you for your opinion. I really do hope that he may be falling in love with me, because I love him as well. And it's nice that you think that girls should be treated nicely, but everyone should if they deserve it, really. :)

I'm not complaining by any means, he just said it randomly and it was kind of odd all of a sudden. After all, the only other term of endearment he's used is "cutie".
