Simply describing yourself as having "big eyes" is very vague. I know people with beautiful round doe-like eyes and people with huge bugged out eyes that look like they're one step away from popping right out their sockets. Obviously the answer would be different depending on which you're talking about.
You clearly stated your boyfriend loves them though. Who gives a crap about other peoples' opinions on them, then? Really, everybody has individual opinions and preferences, some people may find your eyes ugly and others may find them beautiful. It's completely subjective and when you think about it like that you realize just how insignificant peoples' opinions on you actually are.
As a side note, if you want to make your eyes look smaller then line them all the way around with black eyeliner.

Not really a problem. I'm sure you look fine and it's a good alternative to small eyes. And even if you are ugly your ex had no right to say those things to you!
