It might just be a signature thing of his to do. Some people send xx's, some people send emoticons and others don't bother with any signature endings. If he does it with his other friends then I'd say it's probably just a sign that you and he have a pretty close friendship going on. I don't think he means anything more than that but I don't think he's friendzoned you either.
You should find out if he does that with his other friends or not. If he does it's likely just to be a signature but if not then it might be something he does to tease you or as a sorta nickname type thing. :)
You can always just ask him why he calls you 'bud' :P Seems a bit blunt but if you do it in a teasing way then he probably won't have a problem answering it or giving you a clue as to what he means. :D

I don't know... I really can't imagine a young guy friend zoning you... I almost think it is a defense mechanism so you don't catch on that he likes you. Kinda like he's responding in the opposite way he feels to overcompensate his "intense" feelings from leaking.

I personally don't like using or hearing that word. It just sounds goofy; but yeah that's about as platonic of a word he could use.

he could be friend zoning you or he could like you but is playing it cautiously because he is unsure of your feelings towards him
