What does it mean when a guy says thank you after sex?

My boyfriend and I have been together for a year. We live in the same place now. He always says thank you after having sex with me. At the beginning I thought it was a first time thing but after a year he says it even more often and when I ask why he says thanks he just smiles. Maybe I am overthinking this or maybe not. Any thoughts?
