Why would a guy ask "what are you wearing right now?"

this is a question for a friend of my teenage daughter. I've told her what I think the answer is, but sometimes you guys surprise me so I thought I'd ask you lol...she says every time she's on the phone or texting with her boyfriend he'll randomly ask her (about 3 times in a day) what she's wearing "um tshirt and jeans" or "tank top and pj bottoms" whatever the case may be and he'll say "Ok :)"
So, why would a guy ask "what are you wearing right now?"

fyi as I said below I told her it's because he wants a visual so he can think about taking it off(?)she being a naive teenage girl doesn't understand why he would even bother asking that I'm hoping to get a guys perspective to explain to her why he'd ask

Usually, guys just say it to make the girl feel good about herself. It's an indirect compliment.

Direct:

You look good --> (She feels good about herself)

Indirect:

What are you wearing right now? --> (Her: he wants to imagine what I look like) --> (Her: he can't help but thinking about me) --> (She feels good about the way she looks) --> (She feels good about herself)

Of course, the KEY ASSUMPTION is that the girl is smart enough to fill in the blanks in her own head. lol

So this poor guy probably tried it once, and the girl is like "I'm wearing blah blah blah. Why are you asking me what I'm wearing?" And this guy is like, "Okay, so she's a little slow, but we'll try it again, she'll eventually get it." Welcome to 3 times a day later, and this girl still doesn't get it, and it's evolved into this complicated issue.

But, as far as his own motives? (In order of hierarchy) Maybe (1) he wants to give her an indirect compliment, so she can feel good, without him doing so directly, because he's shy, (2) he wants to visualize how she looks, so he can think about her, and so his sexual interest in her doesn't disappear; (it's definitely NOT to do anything else; p0rn is just clicks away, a guy's imagination isn't HD enough to give a guy quality-enough fap-content), (3) he wants to get a feel for the kind of things she wears, so he can get a better understanding for her style. (after all, what you wear speaks volumes about your personality. It's a proxy for him to assess this girl's self-esteem, confidence, intelligence & creativity [even though, I hope his answer to that is clear by now], and to see if he's REALLY attracted to her. I mean, after all, if she doesn't have the style she's looking for, that's definitely one factor to take into account when deciding whether to continue being interested in her or not).

he's pretty big into compliments with her so that could be the case but he's usually not shy about handing them out so not sure about that one. it's not really complicated she's just perplexed by it lol it doesn't bother her and they've been dating about 6 months so he knows her style pretty well.

she thinks it's weird that boys need to get an image. I talked to her about how guys are visual and want to get an image of her in his head...girls don't need to do that we make up our own images so she doesn't really get the point of asking that so much lol...that's one way that men and women are very different I think.
