Why does my coworker call me baby?

I’m an 18 year old girl who has worked in retail with an 18 year old guy for a little over a year. I’ve had a crush on him for a while now and he’s known for a while too but only recently he’s started calling me baby. Why would he call me this? He’ll say it casually too like “can you please help me with this baby” or “come over here baby”. Even today I needed him to cover someone’s shift and I texted him asking if he could and he said, “I can’t I’m so hungover baby”. Do you reckon there’s a possibility that he likes me? It’s only very recent he’s been saying this when he’s known for so long that I like him but nothings happened

Why he says that is SO beside the point here. How about: do you like being called that by a guy you barely know? Do you like it when he does it front of others too? If you don't, you need to tell him to stop. I hate guys who have such little respect for boundaries.

We’re close friends so I don’t really mind haha. Also he only ever calls me baby when we’re alone. He’ll treat me completely differently in front of our coworkers. However my manager has been trying to set us up together so I’m not sure what he’s like with her

Only god knows. If he knows that you like him then there isn't really much you can do, if it bothers you that he calls you that then ask him to stop.

Putting myself in his shoes, I would probably call a girl that as a way of flirting with her but not being totally into her enough to date her. If he's a really attractive guy then he probably flirts with other girls and makes other girls wonder as well.

Some people call people baby, some people call people they consider "baby".
But most people will tend to call people by the way they get the best response.

He could like you, or he could just know you like him and be trying to get on your good side.
And that's if he actually knows he likes you.
Good chances is that you inadvertedly trained him to call you baby.
