Because it's awkward when you have been dating and he doesn't know how you feel about it. If you're comfortable with him talking about other girls, let him know. If he still doesn't want to talk about it then he's probably the one who is uncomfortable with it.

Well he was talking about girls he dated, not a current girl. I’d rather he not but since it was about girls in the past I didn’t mind so much. I just wondered why he hated to keep going on about them.

Like you said, you would have preferred if he didn't talk about them. The topic came up for whatever reason and this was his way of acknowledging that it might be uncomfortable. There's no hurt in telling him what you're okay with and what you don't want to hear.
