What does it mean when a guy says he's proud of you?

I told this guy I got a new job and he said he's proud of me that really made me feel good.

He may not have expected you to be qualified for the job.

He may not have been able to think of something better or funny so he settled for that.

I may never know but you can simply ask him if you question the genuineness in his response.
