Why does he text me first and then not reply?

a guy i'm talking to always does this thing where he'll swipe up on my snap story and say "you look cute" or "pretty" and when i try to make conversation with him he goes ghost... what's his deal?

So in this specific case, I’d say it’s not him commenting on your snap to make conversation, he’s just complimenting you. If you want him to potentially start a conversation then stop jumping to create one when he comments. Instead just acknowledge the compliment with a thanks or whatever, let him initiate instead, assuming that’s what he wants to do. Until then, just read the room. I know It’s easy to get caught up in wanting more from the guy, but keep in mind that just because he’s your crush, you wanna get to know him better and start something, doesn’t mean he’s available for that or even interested romantically. He could be talking to another woman or lord knows his situation, but it’s important to remember that.
