What does it mean when a guy tells u "you look stunning today" instead of pretty/beautiful?

"Stunning" means more then just beautiful.
And no trust me, no woman is "stunning" every day.
If he *genuinely* meant that you where stunning that day it's because you genuinely looked better then usual.
And yes, a good genuine smile reaching the eyes can do that with a girl.

He probably meant exactly what he said.
That sure, you look nice most days, but that one day you where genuinely breathtaking, stunning him/shocking him with your beauty, as opposed to just be nice looking and someone he appreciates seeing.

So no, you don't generally look stunning.
You looked stunning in that moment because you looked far better there and then then what he expected, taking him by surprise, stunning him while his brain had to process his impressions.

Anyway, I don't know what his or your culture thinks.
But in mine I'd recommend not to claim that you *always* look stunning etc.
We generally don't appreciate self praise in my culture. I believe that Americans are more tolerant of that.
But yeah, it's great when a girl has the self confidence to be comfortable in her own skin and *feel* good.
That's super attractive.
And it's the kind of thing that tends to take part in leading to those genuine smiles that makes a girl truly beautiful.
But *saying* that you are this or that, implying that you're better then others doesn't come of as that kind of genuine confidence but instead as something that at least in my culture isn't appreciated.

But yes, it sounds like you have reason to feel confident, because he at least believe that you are genuinely beautiful, and apparently even "stunning" when you're smiling genuine smiles.

"Stunning" is always an interesting choice of words because while it usually refers to beauty and attractiveness, it also can mean "something that causes astonishment, shock or disbelief"! At your ages, I'm certain he meant it as a compliment, and was trying to say something more elevated than just "beautiful", for any number of reasons.
