Why would a guy joke about being ugly then apologize and say just kidding a bunch of time?

He literally said ''You know, you're really ugly'' and then right away said ''Sorry, I'm just kidding''.

After only 2 seconds, he said ''Well you're kind of ugly'' and then says ''just kidding''. Then he said ''well you're just a little bit ugly'' and again says ''just kidding''.

I said nothing because well he got me confused. Was I suppose to go on with the joke? Was I suppose to yell at him? I didn't know how to react. I still didn't get the joke. I really found nothing funny. Can someone explain why would a guy do that?

It's because he actually thinks that. You can't say it's just a joke to everything and expect there are no underlying biases to form the reasons you make those jokes.

It's okay if he's just an edgy guy who likes to joke around, but if you're constantly making jokes about it, then you have to wonder how sincere the "it's just a joke" defense is. And how much is it him just avoiding the responsibility for the stuff he actually believes?

He's avoiding telling you the truth because he's a spineless coward. This means he's probably only with you because he thinks you're easy to manipulate and wants to take advantage of you.
