My wife is a very independent person but I will always open and hold the door for her. Shebhas gotten to a door before me and regularly tries to hold it fo me but it never works. I take the door from her and she enters first. I was raised to be a gentleman and I am always that way. Respect takes no effort and I find it is always appreciated.
