VERY creepy, and legally inappropriate if he was harassing a minor (school girl) depending on the girls age.
A middle aged man has NO relevance to a teenage schoolgirl. I would have said something if he were my friend, and called him out on his behaviour.
That probably made her feel uncomfortable, some random old guy was bothering her and speaking to her for no reason. I hope nothing inappropriate was said or discussed between them.

@DarkLegacy Depends on the context of the conversation. "School Girl" referring to late teens - age of consent is still considered a minor, meaning if the context of the conversation had any sexual / inappropriate / grooming or intimate details, the childs parent CAN legally press charges.
If you review the law, and the legality around "Age of consent" that is NOT referencing a discussion LOL. It's referencing the age of consenting to a sexual activity, so literally what you have pointed out is entirely irrelevant.
You may want to use google before stating an opinion thats not even relevant to what was being asked. You have made yourself look incredibly unintelligent.

I'm sure if given the opportunity, she would not choose an old guy over someone young, and her own age, but we do not know what was discussed anyways.
Harassment, sexual harassment, can absolutely be charged for verbal conversation. That is why precedent has made the laws, to protect people from unwanted explicit conversation.
