What does it mean if a guy is kind to you even when he's sad?

So there's this guy I like in my class. We aren't exactly close but we're friends. He failed an important exam on his birthday, but when I wished him and said good luck, he replied warmly, even sent funny stickers and everything. I didn’t think much about it until I found out he actually failed his exam. Does it mean something? Or is he just being kind?

Some people are just kind even if they’re not doing well themselves i. e. sad depressed things like that because they know how it feels to be sad and what not so they don’t want other people to experience that feeling I know it’s hard sometimes especially with somebody you have feelings for like always this mean, he feels the same way orso. I can kinda understand why you’re wanting to know.
