I'm a kickboxer (6 years) and a boxer (6 months), and I turned out quite healthy and good. :) why couldn't it be a girls sport? Because girls aren't physicly as strong as males? Bullshit, it's about technique, speed, stamina, intelligence, timing, the correct attitude and THAN strenght.
With good technique anyone, young or old, male or female can get far.
So it isn't about strenght at all.
Because you will get hurt? Oh please whatever you want to do in life your gonna get hurt, you dance you will strain your ankles, find a good responsable club (you always got those shady ones were they don't care much about protection or respect), like at our club nothing serious has ever really happened. I've only had bruises (generally on your arms, hips or feet ), some ripped toes (which isn't even from getting hit :p), and some other minor shit.
I am a horseback rider, I have hurted myself more doing that than boxing or kickboxing.
I can't really think of any other reason as to why people would oppose... :/
It's an amazing sport I tell you! You def. should try it, however it is a really tough sport not just physicly but also mentally, there will always be people looking down on you because your a girl. But there will also be people who will be cheering for you and helping you. So don't give up when things get hard, keep going and it eventually will become an addiction :D47 Reply- +1 y
For sport, competing against other girls? Fine.
If you think you can use it for self-defense against a bigger, stronger man though, you've been lied to. - +1 y
First of all might I ask where you box / kickbox are males and females separated? At our clob not, I have stood against a big variety of partners male and female heavy weights and light ones. The guys and girls wo compete at big scale competitions are obviously way out of my leageu but that is it. wether I will be able to protect myself outside the club, if attacked I simply don't know, you never know how many of them there are gonna be, weapons, usage of drugs,... but I do know my chances are at least higher than your average joe\jane. I know exactly how and where to hit to conflict damage, I personally think the only problem would be that I would fight to clean.
- +1 y
Sparring a guy who is being extremely gentle in a dojo is VASTLY different from a man attacking you on the street. He's not going to wait for you to put your guard up or adjust your headgear. He's going to come at you from behind and try to choke you out, or chloroform you, or just knock you in the back of the head so hard you lose consciousness.
- +1 y
haha I know what you mean but gently is by far how you could describe how things go at our club:p (they know I can handle it) I learned very fast to keep my coverage up or I would getknocked full in the face or side. I know it might be hard for you to understand because I get what you mean, I see those woman too (the ones who don't really mean it ) but I (and I've know girls like me) am nothing like that. And as you stated they could choke me or use chloroform but then again it wouldn't matter if your a male or female (unless your jackie chang lol). My dad is the trainer, if you think that's an advantage you are very much mistaken... he would hit us with sticks to correct our posture, made me hitbooks at age 7 to harden my knuckles, hit me square in the face if I wouldn't hold my coverage up. Even now the sneaky bastard uses dirty tactics to open holes in my defenceand take advantage of them, but then again it keeps me sharp :p so it's good training.
- +1 y
I don't believe in using full strength or full speed unless I am desperate. Over-committing yourself to a single attack is the worst mistake you could make against a trained martial artist. Your dad seems like he's been pretty hard on you but I guess he just wants his little girl to be able to protect herself. If I ever have a daughter I'd make sure she could too.
- +1 y
sure beacues you are well trained and have experience, but there are guys that don't have that experience. Especially on the streets, I doubt any of them have any real experience / knowdledge of martial arts (anyone can throw a punch). I've seen many street fightesrs/assholes wanting to give kickboxing in our club a try, they are the ones who leave the fastest. they only use their strength, no stamina, no speed, not much of a defense,...

A few years ago, she came to my school to speak. She really loves boxing, and you can definitely tell. I'm fairly sure (it was a long time ago, so I don't remember exactly everything she said) that she told all the girls that if they're interested in boxing, they should give it a try. Obviously boxing is a challenging sport for anyone, but if you think that it's something you'd really enjoy doing, then hell yeah. Give it a try! Of course girls can do boxing.

Tell your mom to watch what girls do on the animal planet. Learning how to defend one's self is pivitol to survival. Human females are conditioned not to be physical and are conditioned not to defend themselves. This goes against every natural instinct of living species.
Do a google search of women violently beaten to death and show your mom. Ask your mom if she could live with herself knowing that you got beaten to death, and she could have prevented it if she actually gave a damn to teach you self defense.10 Reply
I'd rather date a sporty tomboy, than a nerdy bookworm any time. I love girls who can talk smack, and be one of the boys yet be feminine at the same time. The thing is you will intimidate a lot of guys, but those who can take the heat will be there to see you shine.

There are tons of guys bigger, stronger, faster, smarter than Brent Steffensen, but he was the one who saw her true value before she made it to the finish line and really loved her for who she was, and the work she putted into her craft before she made it. Does it count?54 Reply- +1 y

+1 yThis statement is not bull.. its true to some extent.. Guyz never, ever, ever love a girl or date a girl who box!!! They even dnt like the girls having ripped bodies!!! The attraction of a female by nature is that she is soft and polite.. that makes her attractive to every boi!!! Plus guyz by nature are the hard one and whether they admit it or not, conciuosly or unconciously , they are reppeled frm some girl who is kicking more arses than the bois!!! Its the same that would u like a guy who is having nail-polish on his nails.. obviously no.. bcz its a purely grly trait!!! Boxing destrys all the feminine image of a female!!! But if u want to stay fit and sexy.. u shud attend youga classes or aerobics... this will give ur body the curves, tht would drive the guyz crazy fr u!!! and as for ur boxing fever, u might have fun with some boxer boifrnd!!! :D gud luck.. i hope that u got my point..!

Its not like I am against boxing.. Grls do box.. and do it awesomly!!! If u want to, who on earth can stop u frm acheiving ur goal.. I was just talking generally!!! I too like sporty girls.. Sports like swimming... a swimmer cud have an awesome body.. etc!!! And if u want to learn self defence.. karate is a good sport.. can make ur curves even more attractive... but if ur heart is tuck in boxing than u shud.. U might perform distinctively if u have a crazy luv fr that sport

Your statement is patently ridiculous. If you actually believe that what I said was meant to include those things which are physiologically only possible by males or females I suggest you cease using the Internet.
- +1 y
So you admit men and women are physiologically different? Then maybe women shouldn't be relying on styles that depend on brute-strength to defend themselves against bigger, stronger men.
- +1 y
Actually @jointhepatriachy I don't want to take boxing as self-defense. More for the reason of a belief I have.
- +1 y
Long as you don't go picking street fights thinking you're gonna out-box some ex-football player, go for it. It's a fun sport, but you can get injured doing it, so keep your guard up and protect your head. Brain damage is not fun. I speak from experience. ;)

Okay :) thanks for the advice.

Maybe you shouldn't make snap judgments, like your assumption she intended to take boxing as a means of attacking or defending when all she said was she wanted to join a boxing gym.
Anonymous(30-35)+1 yYou can do it, but chances are 99% that it won't make you happy.
I did martial arts for 9 years, I enjoyed it in part, but it was not for me. It made my hands big, it made me develop a boyish physique at the time, I was never as good as any of the guys and it frustrated me, made me feel like a burden even if I was the best female fighter in there, I was ignored in the romantic sphere on account of more fragile looking, feminine girls, I learned absolutely nothing of practical value since females simply can't defeat a large majority of males in a fight and there is no way around that.
The only valuable thing I took out of that dojo were the nice friends I made and the teachings pertaining to philosophy of martial arts, both of which I could have found in a library.
I should have gone with volleyball.20 Reply

This is basically my opinion on the matter, but I didn't state it so eloquently as you did. I kind of get pissed off when I hear about these women with black belts in TKD or women who took women's self defense or kick-boxing that think that shit will work in a fight. They've been lied to.
I say girls can box... I'm kinda iffy when you use the word feminist though as there are 3 kinds.
I know a girl who's a champion at karate. So I don't see why girls can't box too. just don't let it over run your life and prevent you from doing other things.04 Reply- +1 y
These dojo's will make any pretty girl that joins their "champion" and use them for models for their videos to promote their schools. I do martial arts, I know all about this crap.

I knew a first grade girl that was a black belt in Tae Kwon Do when I went to school. Belts don't mean shit. Certificates don't mean shit. You can literally become a Krav Maga instructor in ONE DAY if you pay the right guy enough money and sit through a seminar.

If you try using boxing in a street-fight against a man you're going to probably end up in the hospital. The regional women's kickboxing champ here can't even touch an average out of shape guy who's never been trained in anything in a boxing match. I've seen this with my own eyes. A woman using boxing is like a chihuahua trying to fight like a pit-bull. There are plenty of fighting arts that smaller weaker people can use effectively. Take Wing Chun for example, invented by a woman, a Shaolin nun. I don't get why you women down-vote me for trying to tell you the truth. People telling you that you'll overpower a bigger stronger faster guy in a fight with a brute-strength sport like boxing are lying to you. It's like trying to teach a midget to wrestle an alligator.
- +1 y
With all due respect I didn't down vote you I don't down vote other people's opinions because it is your opinion if I don't agree with a person's opinion I just pass it by. Also, I'm not talking about fighting a guy where I live women fight too so every gender needs to know how to defend themselves. Also when it comes to street fighting I agree boxing isn't the best sport but karate may be better. Any sport that teaches speed and agility is good but what is most important is to read your opponent. When it comes to fighting it is better to be smarter and ahead of your opponent than stronger in most cases. But I don't know why the asker wants to box but I believe she has the right to. And boxing and MMA is a good work out and stress reliever. And if she wants to go professional then good for her.
- +1 y
You're right about reading your opponent being the most important thing. It is better to fight clever than to fight like a brute. The reason I take such a strong stance against women learning boxing is it ends up being useless in an actual altercation with a man, but they get an ego from it and think they can knock out any guy who fucks with them. You're better off not knowing a damn thing but carrying a knife than you are thinking you know how to fight when you don't.
- +1 y
I'm against any kind of unreasonable fighting like there are other ways to settle a dispute. But it is best to learn any type of way to defend yourself than nothing at all. I'm not telling people to go around starting fights but if as you say a knife is the only thing you have to protect yourself when you are in danger then so be it. But not every place allows people to legally walk around with a knife that can give you jail time.
- +1 y
Someone who knows they can't fight will make wiser decisions in a fight than someone who can't fight but thinks they can, imo. There are first grade girls with black belts in Tae Kwon Do. There are men exploit martial arts to make money and don't teach a damn thing that actually works.
- +1 y
You know what you have a point. I completely agree. Because a person that can't fight would be wise enough not to get hit and try to escape where as a person that can are aiming to get one punch in then leave. Not always is it like this but most of the time it is.
- +1 y
Basically they are more likely to put themselves into a violent altercation if they think they can fight. Then they find out they can't fight the hard way, and it isn't pretty. But I guess I'm the bad guy for telling women they aren't physically as strong as men. We have to pretend everyone is perfectly equal at everything or we're just horrible people. :P
- +1 y
This is why I don't down vote people because what you said was broad but your reasoning to it is smart and true so imma give you a thumbs up now that I understand what you mean.
- +1 y
Thank you for thinking with your brain instead of your heart. These people who tell women what they want to hear instead of what they need to hear do them more harm than good.

+1 yYour Mum is an idiot. Girls can box, it's good for fitness and self-defence. I knew a girl who was that good other girls wouldn't fight her anymore, so she had to fight guys, and she kicked their asses. It's not a feminine thing but who cares?

+1 yBoxing is a terrible fighting art for women. You lack the upper body strength to be effective at it. Learn Wing Chun or something that a smaller weaker person can use against larger opponents. I've never even heard of a female who can deliver a knock-out while wearing boxing gloves.
342 Reply- +1 y
Those guys are obviously pansies. A lot of men are nowadays. The thing you need to realize, Hannah, is that the world's strongest woman can't even beat average guys in arm-wrestling. You'll never be stronger than a man who works out or works hard. It doesn't matter how many steroids you pump into your ass. I'm not saying women shouldn't learn some form of self-defense, what I'm saying is boxing is a terrible form of self-defense for smaller people. This includes smaller, weaker men. I boxed with great success when I was younger, only lost once by knockout. I'm also certified to teach martial arts. I know what I'm talking about. I'm actually a professional.
- +1 y
you're actually just a misogynist and lack professional vigour based on your own masochistic arrogance. I have a friend who's been doing boxing for 9 years now and she's won numerous competitions and even taken down her MALE co-worker a good few times. Oh yeah, did I mention she's an instructor... Oh wait, I thought women couldn't box?
- +1 y
I'm sure if professional female boxer Mia St John deliver one of her strongest punch, you would feel it.
- +1 y
That co-worker was either a pussy or not fighting back. I'm sick of you women thinking you're badasses because some mangina let you hit him a few times and didn't fight back. Also, personal beliefs have nothing to do with fighting ability. Most actually good fighters are horrible people because they tend to resort to violence. The politically correct humble masters telling women they can out-box a man normally can't fight their way out of a wet paper bag.

titoloco, that woman was a JUDO MASTER! I said in another comment on here that Judo would actually be effective for women, Boxing just isn't. Boxing relies on speed and brute strength, which most women lack in comparison to men. If she tried out-boxing two men at the same time, she'd be the one in the hospital. Luckily this woman wasn't a fool and realized it is better to use a man's strength against him than to try overpowering him herself.
- +1 y
What the hell? I've never slapped anyone ever nor done trailer trash things you're mentioned.
This is the link for that specific female boxer I've mentioned and yes, I believe she can beat the average untrained man. No where did I say women can beat men. I referred her as one specific woman that isn't no average untrained Jane.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mia_St._John - +1 y
Has Mia St. John actually beaten any men in the ring? Unless she has, that example doesn't mean shit.
- +1 y
I'm sure she can beat you and other men that can only punch. She wasn't just a boxer but actually a marial artist pro too. I'm sure she has had to fought guys there.
This is the information on the link: While a student, she compiled a taekwondo record of 27โ1, was awarded a black belt, and worked as a model to fund her education.[4] - +1 y
Tae Kwon Do is a terrible art, also. I beat a black belt in Tae Kwon Do who was also trained in MMA and Jeet Kune Do back in November. He only got one hit on me, and I didn't even feel it. The whole time I was tying him up like a pretzel, going easy on him. The few times he almost hit me I quickly deflected it and hit him so hard he actually had to stop because he was seeing stars. I can trace my martial arts lineage back to Bruce Lee and Ip Man, all the way back to the Shaolin Nun who created Wing Chun to fight against the Qing dynasty 300 years ago. My art's actually been used to assassinate people. I've trained soldiers and police officers. I trained an MMA fighter and he put his opponent in the emergency room. Trust me, you're not going to win using brute strength against someone with more brute strength than you.
- +1 y
Do you have any evidence of wing chun by women being more effective vs. an untrained or non wing chun using male than boxing?
- +1 y
Wing Chun was invented by a Shaolin nun. And I've used it against men a foot taller than me and a hundred pounds heavier. I also taught a girl to hit harder once than all the big body builders at the gym, because Wing Chun's power comes from structure, not brute force. Those guys were just punching with their arms and shoulders, I taught that girl to use her whole body and she could deliver a Hell of a punch. It would hurt your hand when you held up a focus mitt and let her hit it.
- +1 y
Whoa some girls didn't agree with your opinion. :3
The reason I said other martial arts may have been
a better choice of self-defense, is pretty much because
boxing's way of defending, is taking/enduring hits, which
personally, I don't believe is a reliable form of self-defense.
In no way am I saying boxing is bad, it's just that
other fighting styles would act as a better
choice, when it comes to self-defense.
They didn't even seem to care when you mentioned you
were certified and professional, then they probably won't
take much notice that I'm a 20yeah veteran of combat tai chi. ^.~ - +1 y
Arm punching is terrible technique for -any- striking sport. I know soviet researchers on their own amateur boxers found they were generating ~85% of their power from the legs and core with only 15% from shoulders (interestingly the hardest hitters had a more even legs/core split, the average hitters were very core driven).
Still interested to know more, but the most obvious point is that every art taught badly or not backed up with sparring is likely crap in the practitioners hands. - +1 y
They're so indoctrinated to think they're equal to men at everything that they can't honestly admit most men are stronger than them. Part of being a good martial artist is knowing your weaknesses, and how to compensate for them. If someone is faster than you, you can compensate using economy of motion. If someone is stronger than you, you can compensate using leverage. Boxing, kick-boxing, Tae Kwon Do, etc. do not teach any of these things. They are made for sport, in order to test to see who is stronger/tougher. So using an art that relies entirely on strength and endurance against someone stronger and more durable than you is just suicide in my opinion.
- +1 y
It's actually quite nice to have someone who know
what they're talking about speaking up for true martial arts.
I'm not the type to seek debate, so I wouldn't be able
to do it myself, keep practicing your Wing Chun, I consider
that to be a very good choice of martial arts.
I've always had it in my head, that if you really want to
learn fighting, why not go back to it's roots? "China" ^.^ - +1 y
What I'm saying is that styles that rely on brute force are not suitable for females. I practice a martial art that was invented by a woman, btw. I see a lot of girls take kickboxing or tae kwon do or some shit that doesn't work, and they get an ego and think they're badass when they couldn't even beat an average Joe. Boxing or kickboxing might be fine if you just want to exercise and compete for sport against other women of the same weight class. But if you try using it against a bigger, stronger man, you're going to get hurt. And I don't want women getting hurt just because some jackass lied to them and told them they're as strong as most men are when they aren't.
- +1 y
It's not suitable for females? Yet there are tons of girls who are excelling in these sports... who the hell cares if a man would still be able to take her out? That doesn't mean that she still can't find it enjoyable as a hobby. That's like saying that you don't want to start running for sport/as a hobby just because Usain Bolt exists. It's stupid. Nobody said anything about being just as strong as men. That's kind of irrelevant.
- +1 y
They excel in these sports against other women. They aren't beating men in the ring. You can't provide one example of that. I said it's fine if you want to compete for sport against other women. It's terrible for self-defense though. A lot of women put themselves in dangerous situations and end up dead or in the hospital because some jackass showed them three boxing punches and they think they can whoop any man.
- +1 y
I'm thinking that most of the people here are in it
for sport/exercise rather than actual self defense.
That's fine of course, but it saddens me slightly
when someone tries to justify something like boxing
as a decent means to defend yourself against
someone physically superior.
Now, I consider myself fairly decent at what
I do, but even I would never use physical strength
to go up against someone who's bigger than I am. ^.^ - +1 y
Right, because Tai Chi doesn't rely on physical strength. That's why it actually works against bigger opponents. The same could be said for Judo, or Aikido. I have actually seen women use those arts to whip men's asses. These people are just ignorant and brain-washed to think women are equal at everything including physical strength. Even Yim Wing Chun knew she couldn't beat a man with brute strength alone. And she's the most legendary female martial artist in history.
- +1 y
Yes, I probably have the most credentials here in fighting, and the main martial art I used was invented by the most famous female martial artist in history. But somehow I guess I'm not qualified to speak on what would work for women in self-defense. :P
- +1 y
I think you deserve those down votes; My Sifu practiced wing chun for 8 years and then became a JKD master and started teaching. I for instance, practiced Wing Chun for 6 months, then BJJ for 3 months and finally Got hooked for Life on JKD. My Sifu is very open in the Idea of incorporating other martial arts into the JDK Stance, he's admited to us that he hates Grappling because it isn't practical in a street fight if you get mugged by 2 to 4 guys, still he insist we learn it from another teacher (BJJ master) in the martial art school. My sifu isn't as arrogant as you are, he's humble enough to teach us basic boxing, and know the limitations of JKD. He's told us many times, I'm training you to stay on your feets long enough to escape the situation. He told us that one time in a Bar he was drinking with a friend and a guy stared at him for 10 min, and told him he didn't like my sifu's face. My Sifu went to pee, the guy followed and my Sifu broke the guy's face against the pee bowl.
- +1 y
What works for you and your sifu won't work for women. Boxing does not work for women. Your sifu would probably even agree if he is any good at what he teaches. I'm not being arrogant, I'm being honest. What's arrogant is these men who think three boxing punches from a 100 lb girl is gonna knock out some 200 lb thug who attacks them on the street. I agree that grappling is not that effective on the street, even most jujitsu instructors admit that. My JKD/Wing Chun sifu also has a blackbelt in jujitsu and says the same thing.
- +1 y
I don't think my teacher wants to be affiliated with The Patriarchy to be quite honest. So I'm taking the Master Wong approach here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCZXLgRYTcM
I come from the original branch though, and my sifu was certified under the late Jerry Poteet. - +1 y
This is JUST GOLD. Experienced martial artists explaining 10 times why boxing is a worse choice for self defines for a woman than other, less force based, options, and all girls do, is repeating "but we are strong too! We can bean men!"...
I completely agree with jointhepatriarchy, black belt Karateka and S. D. teacher here for my part (just so you have one more "expert" opinion to mess around with ;) ): Boxing/straight forward and Tae kwon do/to complicated choices are bad choices if it's about self defense for women. In a case of a emergency where you need to defend yourself (because guess what, mostly you'll need SD against bigger males, the others rarely will attack you), it's a bad idea to rely on techniques which require you to be faster&stronger, or at least equally fast&strong as your opponent. Because chances are, you won't be. - +1 y
@patriarchy: I love Master Wong. He's the ultimate :).
& @PrismFemme:
I love your argument, where you go like "A professional female boxer with a shitload of experience can beat a untrained male."... Of course she can. She's trained. That's like dribbling out a dummy in hockey. Not that big of a deal.
@titoloco: Noone said boxing would be useless. It's just been stated, that for WOMEN, it's not the best option, IF it's for self defense.
Gosh some people are so dense on here. - +1 y
I'm certified to teach too but I don't do it publicly because you encounter all this politically correct bullshit. You simply point out to a woman they won't be as physically strong as most men and that boxing is a bad idea, and suddenly you got the Femi-Nazi's wanting to bulldoze your McDojo with their panzer tanks of EQUALITY! This must be why women flock to con-artists teaching unnamed systems they came up with in their back yards instead of wanting to learn a system actually created by a woman who could fight. Those con-artists will tell them what they want to hear. Yim Wing Chun is probably doing somersaults in her grave now reading these comments by feminists who think they can overpower men with brute strength.
- +1 y
This is for jointhepatriarchy. I'm going off the asker's question but I'm considering learning Wing Chun thanks to you. My question is, is it better to learn from an instructor or can I learn through videos?
- +1 y
You can learn the very basics from Master Wong on Youtube. HOWEVER you won't be an effective fighter unless you seek out a good instructor, and good training partners. You need to be able to practice Chi Sao and the various energy drills in person with multiple partners to get used to reacting to different people's energy, and will need to do some Chi Gar and sparring too. If you can find a good Jeet Kune Do instructor who can trace their lineage to Bruce Lee, a lot of them use Wing Chun as the foundation of the system, so you can learn some of it there.
- +1 y
So as a starter I can learn through YouTube and apply to a school?
- +1 y
From YouTube you can kind of get an idea of basic things like hand positioning, stance, etc. But you really need an instructor there in person to correct you because the hand movements in Wing Chun have to be VERY specific. For example, if your Bong Sao is not up high enough, it's not going to stop a punch to your face. So for little things like that it's very important to have a good instructor. It can be hard to find a good instructor, but if you can, it will be worth it.
- +1 y
Thank you may I add you in case I have further questions?
- +1 y
Yes feel free to ask me any question regarding martial arts anytime. I'll give you all the help I can.

Thank you.

Join the boxing gym if you want. Who gives a flying fuck what someone else thinks you shouldn't be doing?14 Reply- +1 y
It isn't free, my parents would have to pay
Opinion Owner+1 yThen I suppose while you're relying on them and they're not willing to pay for it, you're SOL until you get your own income. Are they willing to get you a membership with a "normal" gym?
- +1 y
I'm thinking I might do that
Opinion Owner+1 yDo that, and incorporate things like shadow boxing with a resistance band. That's what I do twice a week to get some anaerobic exercise into my normal routines. Also get out the battle rope and do some sets on that. It's a hell of a workout lol
Go far it... I think it would be a great workout and guys will think it is cool/unique.
40 ReplyI think girls can definitely learn to box, i've known girls who've done muay thai, BJJ and the likes for years, they're all pretty solid fighters if you ask me. Do not want to piss them off, just saying.
30 ReplyGo for it, boxing is great for the girls, we all know that it will piss off those primitive, patriarchal chauvinists ;)
70 Reply537 opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. Should men do ballet? I see no problem with women boxing if that's what they want to do.
50 ReplyOh yeah we should! I used to kickbox and it was awesome. Just be careful if you do because I was once sparring with one of the instructors, mind you an almost 200 IBS guy, accidentally kneed me in the stomach. It was excruciating to say in the least.
15 Reply- +1 y
Imagine if a man like that was actually trying to hurt you. You'd be fucked. Women's kickboxing is a joke. It's like taking two chihuahuas, teaching them to fight like a pit-bull, and then putting the winner against an actual pit-bull. Learn a fighting art that actually works for smaller, weaker people, like Wing Chun or Judo.
- +1 y
If you just want to play-fight with other women for exercise, I don't see a problem with boxing/kick-boxing. But if you think that's actually good for fighting or self-defense, you're being lied to. It's like trying win a tug of war against a Bulldozer with a Toyota Camry.
- +1 y
Yeah, I despise these men who barely know anything themselves that make money lying to women like that. These women think they're badass then and go walking down dark alleys at night half naked and shit, then are surprised when they can't actually defend themselves. It makes us martial artists who actually know what we're doing look bad.
347 opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. I do kickboxing. If anyone wants to tell me I can't box because of my gender, they can expect a foot to the face.
415 Reply- +1 y
The women's kickboxing champion here couldn't beat an average out of shape guy in a boxing match, and he'd never been trained in anything. She literally couldn't land a single punch on him. And he was going easy. Learn a fighting art that suits you, you're not going to win by brute-strength against a real man, cupcake.
- +1 y
Don't be condescending, I'm far from a "cupcake". My boyfriend is a martial arts instructor who teaches me self defense and some jujitsu. I learn kickboxing to defend myself and to keep fit. I am still stronger than a lot of guys my age. I know another girl who is ridiculously strong naturally. It depends on build in a lot of cases.
- +1 y
The world's strongest woman couldn't even beat a couple of normal guys in arm-wrestling. What I'm saying is don't rely on using brute-force against someone with way more brute-force than you. You should probably learn all the jujitsu and softer martial arts you can from your boyfriend. Things like Judo, Tai Chi, Wing Chun, etc. will actually work for a woman. But I get sick of women who learn to throw a few (really poor) punches in women's self-defense or women's kick-boxing acting like they can beat a man's ass.
- +1 y
jointhepatriarchy - you are really funny guy and very delusional... if you think that you could defeat this women in arm-wrestling, just try ;) img1.wikia.nocookie.net/.../1000px-Dee-Booher.jpg (her height: 6 ft. 4 in. / 193 cm, her weight: 300 lbs. / 137 kg. Ps - As for martial arts, Yim Wing Chun was one of the greatest female martial artists of all times, no man ever managed to defeat her.
- +1 y
I can trace my martial arts lineage directly to Yim Wing Chun. Wing Chun does not rely on brute, physical strength. That's why I'm telling these women they aren't going to win a fight against a man using boxing. It has zero techniques to defeat a bigger, stronger opponent. It's all about trading blows until one person falls over or gives up.
- +1 y
Also, Zoranq is a pathetic coward who blocked me. I find it hilarious he uses Wing Chun as an example when I actually can trace my martial arts lineage to Yim Wing Chun. My point is you can't use a sport that relies on brute strength to overpower someone stronger than you. Men like Zoranq do women more harm than good by spouting their bullshit and giving them egos they can't back up with their fists.
- +1 y
Muhammad Ali had Jeet Kune Do and Wing Chun training. Irrelevant. What made Muhammad Ali so great was his technique. He trained under Bruce Lee.
- +1 y
I have to say, I don't think this 'expect a foot to the face', aggressive mentality is very smart. Anything could happen in a real fight, male or female, trained or not. But I don't agree with JTP either. Boxing is eminently practical. Soft martial arts are often badly taught. Fine, don't use force against force, but you still need a solid punch/strike, that has been trained on a hard bag. It's about the training, both 'paradigms' can have the reputation of racing through the belts and punching in the air. You're also underestimating how bad the layman is, at simple things like even producing any power when throwing a punch. There's way too many variables here. I don't really see the point of your comment, I agree, it seems chauvinistic. People who are smaller of course are at a disadvantage, but there's too many factors to talk in such a decisive fashion about what is right, and about what one should train. My advice, don't limit yourself and train soft as well as hard, be humble.
- +1 y
You have a point about many martial arts being taught badly. Not everyone can get as lucky as I did when it comes to finding a good instructor. Boxing is practical if you have good punching power. Most women don't have good punching power though. And boxing doesn't really do shit to help you develop punching power. I boxed myself, and I know this from experience. Boxing also teaches you to rely on using your gloves as shields, which won't work in a real fight. My point is you can't keep trying to overpower people who are stronger than you and expect to be successful. Part of being a good fighter is understanding your weaknesses, and finding ways to compensate. These people telling women a few punches and kicks will save them from someone who can do the same punches and kicks but ten times harder are doing them more harm than good in my opinion.
- +1 y
Martial arts can be used in the boxing ring, that's why I had such great success myself when it came to boxing. A little finesse goes a long way. Women would do better to work on their natural finesse than they would to try and fight like a 200 lb man and use only brute strength. That's why I don't think boxing, kickboxing, or TKD are really good styles for women to learn. Judo, Aikido, Tai Chi, and Wing Chun all suit women better. I've also seen a couple of Chinese women who did good Snake and Eagle gung fu.
+1 yAnybody can box. I'm a girl who's also interested in boxing and I'm pretty feminine, it doesn't make me any less so.
20 ReplyDo it why not and don't listen to people who say you can't do that cause of gender even tho if it's your mom I'm taking classes in kickboxing it's really good for selfdeffense trust me
217 Reply- +1 y
The female kickboxing champion here couldn't even beat an average out of shape guy who had never trained in anything in a boxing match. And he was going easy on her. She never even landed a punch. I'm sick of these con-artists telling women they'll be able to out-box a man in a fight. That might work when the man is going easy and not hitting back, but when the guy is trying to knock you out, you'll find it's a totally different story.
- +1 y
Give me an example that hasn't already been proven as a fake publicity stunt for some McDojo or franchise.
- +1 y
I can trace my lineage to Wu Mei and Yim Wing Chun, and I say that boxing/TKD/kickboxing all rely on brute strength and will not work for women against bigger, stronger men. You could ask any Wing Chun master and they would agree.
- +1 y
Actually you're better off knowing that you don't know how to fight, than you are thinking you do know how to fight when you really don't. These men who use self-defense to extort money out of women and lie to them about what works give martial arts a bad name.
- +1 y
You know what I don't share this story a lot but because you are so sure of yourself here we go mister. I was attaced by some guy while I was walking home from work and I have been taking kickboxing classes for about a month when that happened and I was able to defended myself, yes I didn't kick the guy's ass till he was about to die but I managed to kick his ass to save myself and run away from him, so yes I'm really aware of that females can't really kick males asses but I do know that these things such as kickboxing and selfdeffense classes do work and if something did happen to me that night id have said at least I tried to defend myself rather than do nothing so I encourage women to go to these classes cause you never know when something like that can happen. So don't be that immature and tell us to just sit and do nothing.
- +1 y
I'm not saying do nothing, I'm saying do something that will work. You're lucky the guy wasn't that tough because some men can take punches from other grown men and just laugh about it. I'm glad you was able to defend yourself, but if you ever get the chance to learn a more disciplined art like Judo or Aikido I highly recommend that you do. People need to realize that situations like the one you described are what martial arts were originally meant for, not for sport or for exercise.
- +1 y
I don't know anything about Bagua Zhang, all I know is that last guy I fought claimed to use it and I kicked his ass.
- +1 y
Actually, bagua is one of those soft martial arts you was espousing earlier :P In fact, it demonstrates something really important. Of course, it's very intricate, so it takes ages to learn. But also, instruction is poor. All the hard methods, all the external conditioning against hard objects, is often left out. People who do kung fu, should be doing iron palm, and have hands and fingers, arms, everything, that feels like a bag of rock when it just touches you. I'm training some bagua (amongst other things) at the moment, and I'm not someone to thus deify a martial art because I am practising it. It is fascinating though. It's a wonderful conditioning exercise, particularly for your legs, with the protracted deep stanced walking, and stretches out your body *extremely* well. In short, it's a superior health exercise. People think it's all about fighting but what you learn about yourself, and how it improves your health, are equally, if not more so, important.
- +1 y
You might get a chuckle out of this supposed bagua fight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0BdwbA6h9I here's some applications that are probably more realistic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgu0ZZUM8qE

+1 yGo ahead and do it if you want to! Forget what your mom says, honestly.
I prefer martial arts myself.311 Reply- +1 y
Other martial arts are definitely more effective. When it comes to using brute strength against someone with more brute strength than you, you're almost always fucked. I highly recommend women avoid boxing or kickboxing because it just gives them an ego they can't back up with their fists. Those classes don't even teach how to deliver an effective punch or kick. I also think Tae Kwon Do is a shitty art that hands out black belts to women that can't fight and gives them an ego.
- +1 y
You can't just tell people to avoid doing something because you don't think it's effective or anything. People can learn whatever sports they want to learn. I don't think anyone is expecting to turn into Chuck Norris or something here.
I've been doing judo for years, since I was about 8 or 9. I've never put myself in a situation where I'd have to use it on someone else though. - +1 y
Well Judo is actually a more effective art for women because it teaches you how to use the opponent's strength against them. Boxing/kickboxing/TKD all just rely on striking power, which isn't a good idea when going up against someone with longer arms/legs and more strength than you. Women need to fight clever, not try to fight like brutes.
- +1 y
Judo is more of a mental challenge since you have to screen your opponent. There's no striking allowed at all, so it's all take downs, pinning, and flipping your opponent to the floor. I think that kind of fighting is just more effective for men and women overall.
I'm pretty strong, but I've got 4 brothers to back me up physically if I need them, lol. - +1 y
Well, there is strength in numbers. It's also good to carry a weapon if you can. I've been judo-flipped, and that shit hurts on a hard surface.
- +1 y
I see what you're saying, though it's illegal to carry anything more than a utility knife around without a permit. Can't even carry pepper spray or mace because that's illegal for civilians too. Oh well.
- +1 y
Oh, right, you're Canadian. You can't even have nunchuks up there. I love my nunchuks, couldn't move to a country where I can't even own them legally.

She actually has more a strikers frame lol. - +1 y

Yes, you women keep using sports that rely purely on brute-strength for self-defense against men who have more brute-strength than you. Don't even bother with softer styles like Judo, Tai Chi, or Wing Chun (which was invented by a woman) those couldn't possibly work. -sarcasm-
- +1 y
Hahaha, dream on boy, I like Wing Chun, but not Judo, Aikido is much better... anyway, more people agree with me, so shut up ;)))))
Anonymous(36-45)+1 yYeah amongst other women that's wonderful that boxing can happen but not only is it a barbaric sport it is not a forgiving sport. The injuries are usually long lasting for women and men so I would not want my mother, sister, daughter doing it and if I was a female I also would not want to do it but if you get much happiness from it then go ahead
00 ReplySure you can box, it's good for self defence, also, there are many guys who like boxing girls, and it's great for your body and stamina.
35 Reply- +1 y
Boxing is terrible for self-defense. I practice a martial art that was actually invented by a woman. We can hardly get any women to practice it though because they all have black belts from TKD or some jackass told them they could protect themselves with brute-force against someone with more brute-force than them. If you want to do it for sport against other women, fine. But you'll never beat a bigger, stronger man using only brute-force.

Neck pain is a 'minor problem' compared to the brain damage at each hit on the head.

Indeed. Luckily I was so fast I rarely ever got hit, I won matches that lasted 30 minutes without taking a single hit. But when you do get hit, yeah, you get a concussion, and it damages your brain. The one time I did lose from knockout I woke up with amnesia. It wasn't fun.
