What determines whether someone takes good care of their nails or not?

Sometimes I'll look closely at pictures to see.

Like for example I was reading about space stuff and I was looking at the photos for Grissom, Chaffee, and White on Wikipedia, and the first two looked fine, but geez White did not care how disgusting his nails looked in his official photograph apparently.

I just can't say how much it annoys me if a guy or girl does not have their nails well trimmed. It just looks so unsanitary and I don't think any of the white part should be showing at all, and if a girl has anything but really well maintained short nails it is an instant turn-off... Maybe this doesn't bother most people? But it does to me.

I agree, I hate when people don't keep up with their nails, it's disgusting. But I do think some white part can be showing, my pet peeve for women is when their nails are chipped for ages, I always think if you can't maintain them don't paint them at all. And men I feel have to have short nails, whenever they're long I want to throw up inside.
