Being an actual student of both and more for over 10 years I would have to learn towards Karate, it's more practical in what it was designed for at least with traditional styles untainted by modern influences this goes for any style of martial arts though, as most marital arts schools now a days are for nothing more then sport, pitiful.
My advice stay away from modernized martial arts, they're to watered down, they only train you to look pretty in the arena. Stick to the old styles designed for war and killing or look for teachers who actually train their students for real life combat and self defense.
Both Kung Fu ( which is just an umbrella term for Chinese martial arts ) and Karate, are strong and powerful martial arts, same as Eskrima, Judo, Boxing or Capoeira to name a few more from around the world. The best thing you can do is train in Dojo's that train you for real combat and real life scenarios train to use certain styles of martial arts as pure styles on their own but also to mix and match them to create a style without weakness to be like water, to take any form it needs to to combat whatever it's in or wherever it's at.
Sometimes it's better to be a steel wall that withstands against everything, other times like water, to adapt, other times like reeds, to flow effortless and at other times like wind to blow your enemies away.
Kung Fu because this:

As one who has been a student of Shotokan karate for longer than you have been alive, I disagree with your assessment of karate as 'lame'. :-)
Kung Fu is good, but I have seen and experienced for myself the difference when matched against different styles of Kung Fu in mixed martial arts tournaments.
Their kata was beautiful to watch, but, in my opinion, their fighting techniques were not as effective as Shotokan.

Karate, in particular Shotokan karate, as taught by the Japan Karate Association.
I am a practitioner of Shotokan karate. I have fought various other styles of karate and other martial arts and I have watched a lot of other people fight. I believe sincerely that Shotokan is superior, as a style.
See:
There are many styles of Karate and Kung Fu is an incredibly broad term that encompasses a bunch of different martial arts as well as things that are not martial arts. But I get what you're saying. I'd pick Wing Chun (Kung Fu)
Kung Fu unless it's Shotoken from Street Fighter.
Muay Boran is my favorite though.
Close quarters combat, judo
Potatoes.
Kung Fu
Kung fu is broad
