Some are, bi-polar is the only one that comes to mind where it will run through families, but you don't know until puberty or a mid-life crisis.

Otherwise all that comes to mind are neurological problems, and most of the ones we've identified as being genetic you can figure out before having kids, or at the very least before they're born.

If you're just talking about being retarded or something, last I read up on it, we still don't know what parts of our DNA, or if that is the defining component, that controls our ability to learn for better or worse.

Some have genetic components. There is also an age related theory - the older the parents the more chance of genetic abnormalities, including some mental illnesses like schizophrenia. I don't know where current science is on that one. I don't know if it's been proven or disproven.

Environment plays a role. Drugs play a role.

Not all of them are genetic, but you are predisposed to them. Bipolar disorder & schizophrenia run in my family on my mom's side, whereas cancer & epilepsy run on my dad's side. But that doesn't guarantee that anyone will "get" it

They very well could be as some families have the same kind of things going on with each generation, even skipping a generation and they appearing again.

Some of them are. They can happen due to genetics and epi-genetics from your parents, or they can happen due to a mutation, or they can just happen because you got exposed to chemicals or hit int he head, or they can just happen because you're learned bad habits become self-reciprocating.

This question is too vague. Some are genetic... Some are triggered by life events.

    For example:

Bipolar is believed to have genetic causes.

    PTSD is triggered by trauma.

I cannot vote, as the question is currently worded... Too many undefined parameters.

    not merely hereditary, no...

but genetics are one of the few factors that can be involved as a COMBINATION of factors that could prompt the development of a few mental health issues

    Yes and no

Research suggests a combination of physical, genetic, psychological and environmental factors can make a person more likely to develop the condition

No. 99% of mental illness is due to a lapse in the immune system

Take vaccines. We are currently injecting babies with over 50 vaccines before the age of 3 or 4. What the fuck is wrong with us. Their immune systems can't detox all the mercury and heavy metals in that shit.

Yes. Genetics plays a very important role in mental health. The rest is upbringing. Alcoholism, Down syndrome, diabetic, obesity, etc, all genetics. It doesn’t mean you will have it if your parents do, but you are more prone to those illnesses. Another factor that causes mental illness is drugs. Bad diet can severely effect your mental health. Sleep is important too.

They can be. Hitler had insanity in his family, he was a product of incest (his parents were father and daughter), and he had Syphilis. Any of those three factors could have contributed to insanity.

Some of them are; I have autism and dyslexia which both are. However, I also have gender dysphoria which is due to childhood sexual trauma. As well, narcissism is due to bad parenting. If I remember correctly psychophrenia and depression are due to chemical imbalances in the brain.

Yes. Its true. Genetics are much of the risk in developing a disorder. Also there are certain factors in our environment that triggers it.

Depends on which mental problem you are talking about. Bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia, and Borderline Personality Disorder may be heritable. Others, maybe so, maybe not. It's a very complicated issue.

Eh. There's some genetic elements to it, but it's usually some fluke happens during childbirth, or an accident happens or whatever.

Some have been shown to have a genetic basis but others can be brought about by trauma.
