I’m doing my first distance even and I’ve never had to wear them. Thank you for your opinions.
I'm a bit old school in that I wear a jock strap under mine. When I took a cycling class in college I suffered from soreness pretty bad, and my professor suggested a jock strap and to switch my seat to a different style. As a jock strap is a lot less expensive than a new seat for my bike I tried that first and it pretty much solved the problem all on its own. I did eventually get a new bike seat, but I still wear a jock strap if I'm going to cycle any distance.

You can do what you like. But on a hot sweaty day. Bicycle shorts or compression shorts can eliminate chaffing. That's why most people wear them.
Wearing underwear underneath seems better because that clingy material would get hot, sweaty, and uncomfortable if it was directly against your skin.

Never wear anything under cycling tights or shorts.
Depends on the type of shorts, and how often you wash them.
Always wear undies underneath.
