When you see a vending machine, you likely expect it to dole out snacks or beverages — not life-saving medication. In Ohio, there exists such a machine that dispenses naloxone, a medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose. And it has already saved 960 lives through overdose reversal in under two years, according to new research.

Interesting. Who pays for that? What's the shelf life of the drug? It sure helped that cop that accidentally OD'd on fentanyl recently. Naloxone, not the vending machine. I haven't looked much at the drug since I never really dealt with people on drugs that aren't about to get shot in the face anyway. Is it a cheap (ish) drug or is it like a grand a hit? I ask because are they going to break into the vending machines to steal it or is that like "stealing tylenol" sort of thing... as in not a thing.

The vending machine dispenses them and other stuff for free. The shelf life of Naloxone is 36 months. If you buy it at a pharmacy it is about $ 100+ for a single dose. Nonetheless stealing it is apparently not a thing - so far.

If it's put up by a nonprofit or something I can get behind it. Their money. Do with it as they wish. Very interesting concept. I wonder how the shopowner that has it in front of his business feels.

I believe it was put up by non-profit who also keeps it stocked. Apparently. It has other things in it, like a small receptacle for disposing of using needles, which I think you can actually take with you. There was a list of other things but the most impressive was the naltrexone. I'm also very unclear as to whether or not it's in front of the business, but I think it was located in an area that a lot of people with drug dependency problems frequent. I'm going to try to see if I can get some more information about all of this.

Also, I think it's important to note that everything that is dispensed from that machine is dispensed for free. It does take tokens which I think are distributed to keep people from just emptying the thing and so you can only get. I believe it's two or three doses a day or something like that.

Yes, I think this is a good idea. The USG has opened our borders and decided to deindustrialize the regions most affected by opioid addiction. There would not be a ton of addicts without the high level of despair that intentional economic decline and social degradation causes. The drug companies who pushed the opioids get away with, at most, a slap on the wrist. Meanwhile, the regime uses conservative pundits and think tanks (controlled opposition) to make the very neighbors and even families of the addicts feel that providing the antidote is somehow enabling the addiction. Maybe it is in some cases, but what if it saves 10% of these lives in the long run? Some people find their way out of the trap.

These middle Americans—degraded, addicted, uneducated as they may be—are my people. I will not turn my back on them or suggest they should be left to die. And, as for the elites who manufactured this crisis and even grew rich from it: may they be cleared out!

When you reward bad behavior you end up with more bad behavior. How many kids will use drugs because they think that if they OD they can always get Narcan?

You clearly do not understand the dynamics and psychology of drug use and drug abuse. Nobody and I mean nobody has ever overdosed deliberately or even use drugs deliberately because they thought they get Narcan.

@Daniela1982 I know because this sort of thing has been done a lot, and the DATA shows that providing people with Narcan reduces use and deaths. It does not increase either one.

If it did increase use it would be outlawed and instead, it is available without a prescription.

@msc545 It is like AIDS. Kids today dont think of it as a big deal like it was 30 years ago. They even have TV commercials that make it look like all you have to do is take a pill and everything is okay. The reality is that you still feel shitty and you still have to deal with it for the rest of your life.
