As someone who has pushed 80-hour weeks plenty of times this last year, I do both.
You gotta prioritize sleep if you have a choice. That’s going to be important for avoiding burnout.
Because if you keep drinking caffeine, you’ll reach a point where it does nothing. We’re you can down 2 energy drinks and still pass out afterwards.
Sleep > Caffeine
Always.
But of course, you can use caffeine for emergencies. You just need to give your body time to get proper sleep and recovery so that caffeine is effective when you need to use it again.
Exercise, splashing your face with cold water, or cold showers (I’m talking ice-cold) can also jolt you awake as well.
As for naps, a performance coach told me that if I need to take naps during the day, it means I’m not sleep well enough during the night.
So, try to optimize your main sleep session if all possible.
As for naps, I personally do 15-minute naps for quick boosts.
Though, if there’s a lot on my mind and it’s taking longer to sleep, sometimes I do a 17-20 minute nap just to give me a couple more minutes to quiet my mind.
Then there’s the longer naps, the 90-minute nap and the 4-hour nap.
The 90-minute nap can make sense if you’ve worked like 6-8 hours and then you need to push another 6-8 hours afterwards.
For the 4-hour nap, this replaces your normal night time nap. So if you worked like 16-24 hours, you can take a 4 hour nap and then work another 16-24 hours or so.
(This is for emergencies though. Don’t over do it.)
Another thing that is just as important as napping and sleeping to avoid burnout is meditation.
If you have a ritual or method you use to clear your head of all the chaos, and you can do that for 15-20 minutes, that’ll allow your brain time to cool off and recalibrate before diving back into the chaos.

Naps if a rescue kitten demands it. If she wants to play then I'll make some espresso
Caffeine but in the form of dark chocolate. Usually I just power through though.
