How do you find a therapist that can help you?

Doctor sent me to a amateur type one like ones who just volunteer and I'm not sure which ones online are good to go too

Thats going to depend a lot on what you are struggling with. In my case none of them could help me since it turned out the whole concept of something being wrong with me mentally turned out to be false. But I did get good at finding experts who better fit my care.

So if you think you are capable, you can try repeating what I did. Firstly you will know the problem better than anyone since you're living it right? So you may have an idea of what kind of tools and solutions you need and what may work on you.

Then search a therapist specialized in those tools. I personally prefer individuals who have their own office over large corporations that assign you one. The corporation they sent me to was absolute trash and caused damage while refusing to help me with what I needed help with. Meanwhile when I searched for my symptoms and my own educated guesses on what was wrong with me I managed to find coaches who were specialized in what I was going trough and looked at my issue as more than a mental issue.

So once you think you have one, call them up and have a conversation with them. Give them a bit of an overview what you need and see if you like their personality and if what they are saying makes sense. If it makes sense they usually offer an intake / trial session or two to see if you two are the right fit, feel free to ask for this. Good therapists know that this is a low entry barrier way for you to see if you can build trust with them. And then once you have someone whose style and expertise fits you place your trust in them and enjoy the ride.

Try the Psychology Today website for someone local to you. That's how I found mine. If possible, see them face to face. You will want to contact more than one. Some are very good, others not so much. Some will work well for you, others won't. If you aren't eager to see someone after the initial interview, then they aren't the right therapist for you.

If you decide to see someone, online or in person, they should be on time and prepared at the start of each session. Asking you to remind them about the last session is extremely unprofessional. Don't accept that. Find someone else. If you find it a struggle to communicate with them, then find someone else that you can converse with easily.

For remote therapy, DO NOT USE "Better Help". They advertise heavily but the reviews are bad. There are online therapy sites with good reviews and you might try one.

If you have medical insurance from your employer, they very likely cover counseling services.
