Is it normal for dentists to charge extra fee's for basic services?

all i had done was a really minor filling repair and i was out of there in 20 minutes but was shocked when i saw the bill at front desk like $400 dollars , the filling itself was only $280 but they charged me a $125 examination fee

all dentist did to justify that fee was briefly look at filling prior to doing the filling , never did x rays or spent much time looking at it

it seems like a scam really , like a $ 100 fee to look at the tooth briefly prior to doing actual filling

I would not go back to that dentist anymore, but I think it is legal

my town has a lot of dentists too so don't really feel obligated to this one , the lady who runs it now she was not my original dentist , she took over the practice from another dentist and we've been stuck with her since

apparently they can charge extra fees but kind of iffy to add a $125 fee to such a basic procedure , she never did an x ray or spent any significant time trying to figure out what was wrong , i showed her the tooth and she agreed that it needed to be fixed

I ask ahead of time. I had one try to charge me 2k for a basic cleaning.

i never asked for a quote as it was just a basic filling repair so wasn't really worried about the cost
