What caused papaya to be bitter?

I bought some papaya today...and it was bitter as ****...what caused this? It is brand new...it least I think...

3. It seems to be, that the fruit wasn`t really ripe. The same f.e. by paprika, if they are green, they can taste bitterly.

The papaya tree was infected with either Mosaic or Ringspot virus. I've grown papaya and know exactly how much a pain in the ass this is.

As a home gardener you can take milk and mix it with water and spay it on the leaves to kill of the virus, but if the infection lasted a while the fruit will go bitter. =/

No LOL. They are plant viruses and will have no effect on you... Mosaic virus also effects squash very commonly.

Yes, It just tasted bitter. But someone here told me it was a virus...so that helped.
