Trending & News I saved a lot in a 401(k) during my 30 years working for an automobile insurance company as a motor vehicle damage field adjuster/appraiser. I retired with a few hundred k and a small pension.
While I was working there, I got married, and my wife and I soon relocated. We bought 30 beautiful acres of oak grassland in a rural area near the mountains, built a 1600', one story house with our own well with a water storage tank that gravity feeds down to our house, septic, and grid-tied solar electric.
We have gardens, a small orchard, and raise beds for growing herbs and veggies.
Or house is on a hill with an amazing view.
We both have our own cars and we have a beat up truck for hauling things.
The post office, a mechanic, a gas station and mini mart and other necessities are 5 minutes away. And we have amazing local fire protection.
The historic city 20 minutes up highway in the mountains is dynamic and we've made lots of friends. 20 minutes in the opposite direction into the valley is a city with lots of big-box stores. And we're an hour away from big cities.
I spent quite a bit of my savings on our house and property. I have great credit, no credit card debt. I am around $250 in debt with our first and second mortgages, but with my wife and my Social Security, my pension, and her income, we pay our bills and live well as long as we are frugal. My only concern is making sure that my savings lasts throughout our retirement.
But I love my life right now. Things turned out amazingly well.
sir u did a lot of amazing things...
u really did a lot...
do u think u reached wht u expected & planned when u were young?
don't u think if u invested ur 401 k u may be a rich man?
That's the thing, I never had plans when I was young. I partied and had fun with no thoughts about the future. I just got lucky with that job I mentioned.
They matched up to 6% of whatever I contributed to my IRA and I contributed 11% of my gross. So I did save a lot and was projected to have over a $million by the time I retired. But the stock market took some serious hits, plus I invested in my house and property (real estate).
I rolled my 401(k) over into an IRA and have a company manage it. They handle the investments it to help it grow.
I have my own car and my own motorcycle. I also am working my dream job
I have my own car. It is nothing fancy but it works and I bought it. It is just a Honda but it is clean and has no issues knock on wood lol. Other than that I can say that I put myself through school with little help from my parents. I didn't want to burden them with loans so I took most of what I needed out on my own and pay my loans to this day. I'll be starting my masters program this fall. More loans but worth it to me because of the field I want to work in. Other than that I don't have much. I rent an apartment so no home. I have a good job but not a career with it. It's just to provide while I finish schooling.
