That does help sometimes. But a hungry bear will thank you for laying still while it sharpens it's teeth.

In that case, if I had bear spray, a firearm, or some other defensive tool available, I'd probably try using it.

Cases of bears actually feeding on humans are extremely rare, so I don't think I'd immediately assume it's there to eat me.

That sometimes works, but not with a hungry bear. Usually when a bear attacks you for getting too close to its cub/s. But that is to end the threat, not to eat you.
