I have studied Science, and I had tried making soap at home several times, as an experiment of science, and then out of curiosity or other reasons. Making homemade solid dish soap involves a chemical process called saponification, between nonedible vegetable oil or mixture of oils with sodium hydroxide. Toilet soap – bathing soaps are made using potassium hydroxide. This process requires some safety precautions and long curing period.
Sodium or potassium hydroxide can cause burns on skin, so it is advisable to wear chemical-resistant gloves and goggles, and precise measurements of materials, as consistency is key in soap making. Aluminium or any other soft metals should not be used in making soap.
In an iron container, add measured quantity of water, and carefully add the lye to the water. Stir gently for a minute or two, and allow to cool to room temperature. Combine the measured quantity of oil / mixture of oils with lye solution and stir well, immersion blender with short bursts makes the process easy and fast. Heating to some higher temperature helps in finishing process faster. Once both the lye solution and the oils have mixed well, formed uniform looking solution, - reaches "trace” - a light, pudding-like consistency, add essential Oil or flavour of your choice and mix well. Final step is to pour the soap mixture into molds, tap the molds gently to remove any air bubbles, and allow to cure.
