When did you decide to propose to your partner?

I'm looking at rings for my girlfriend and I'm trying not to rush that as I want to get her one that's perfect for her. She told me her ring size and she's said that she'll marry me, but I don't think it's right to say we're engaged without a proper proposal and a ring on her finger. She's visiting me this summer, I'm looking to have the ring and my proposal ready to go and do it while she's here. At what point did you decide to propose?
