Is it ok not to invite Neil to the wedding?

I have this friend Neil, that has to be the centre of attention, under all circumstances and doesn’t stop talking. To the point where he ruined my birthday. I’m engaged and considering getting married in my hometown, but I’m reluctant to invite Neil. He’ll somehow make the whole occasion all about himself and ruin my day and everyone else’s, too. It’s a big city and if the rest of my friends stay silent, which they would, he need never know that we got married locally. I’d just say we kept it really small, with just family, overseas.

Man that sounds rough, your friend Neil definitely doesn't sound like he knows how to chill and let someone else have the spotlight sometimes. Weddings are supposed to be about celebrating the couple getting married.

I don't think it would be totally wrong not to invite him if you really think he's gonna steal your thunder and stress you out on your big day. It's your wedding, so you should be able to enjoy it and not have to worry about dealing with someone hogging attention. Maybe leave it at just close friends and fam if that makes it more low key.

But you also gotta think long term about your friendship with Neil. Kinda lame not telling a friend about your wedding. What if he finds out later and feels left out on purpose? Might damage things in the long run. Maybe see if your other friends can help keep him in check if he does come. Or seat him far from you guys so he's not right there interrupting photos and stuff. Tough call either way man, good luck figuring it out!

Don’t invite him. It’s YOUR day, not his! I have a “Neil” in my life, he’s my brother-in-law. Everything is always all about him, and whenever it’s not about him, he makes up sob stories so that people feel sorry for him and focus their attention onto him. I’ve never invited him to anything meaningful - I certainly wouldn’t invite him to my wedding! I don’t care that he’s married into my family, he’s not welcome to attend anything important to me. Neil (your friend) will find out some way or another that you had your wedding without him. It’s inevitable. Put your foot down and be honest, tell him why he wasn’t invited. Otherwise you’re going to run around in circles making up excuses just so that you don’t upset him. Which is a total waste of your time and energy. People like them just need to have boundaries set, otherwise it’ll never end and you’ll be a pushover.
