Why would a friend always jokingly tell you “Marry me”?

If it was truly banter, I don’t see why he’d be upset by your answer when you joke back.

The fact that he gets such an emotional reaction makes me think that he has some level of emotional investment and he actually does have some romantic feelings for you, to some degree at least.

When used jokingly, people would say, “Marry me?” if they see something you do that they’re associating with good marriage material, but usually in a silly context that would make someone laugh like: “This Apple pie is amazing! Marry me?” (Apparently making good pies is enough for this man to propose.)

I personally don’t joke about that, but I’ve seen people use that expression jokingly as a compliment for something.

It’s supposed to be for when you’ve done something that they like and/or are impressed by.

It’s not supposed to be taken seriously, so I don’t see why he’d have an emotional reaction when you say no, unless he’s not completely joking.

Well… I suppose there’s one other possibility. Some people start bantering but don’t know how to handle it when someone banters back. They like to joke but don’t know how to take a joke.

It does work. A guy I knew would ask a girl if she loved him. She said yes in the sense she loved everybody. Eventually she said she did start feeling love after enough repetition.

Fundamentally if you do a loving gesture or an angry gesture you feel the associated emotion.

So he jokes in asking you to marry him and say you jokingly respond yes. He is at least getting you to think on it. And you might start wanting to marry him. Say NO! to be safe. :)

I dunno. I'm the sort of person who treats joke-lies seriously (which is funnier than the joke-lie itself, IMHO). If someone says "Marry me" I'll generally say "Nope"... unless I'm actually interested, in which case I'll say "Okay."
