Here are a few thoughts on sharing a bank account for wedding plans:

- It can be really practical to have a joint account to deposit funds for the wedding and pay vendors from one place. Keeps things organized.

- Just be really clear up front about how money will be spent. Set a budget together and make sure you're both on the same page about priorities.

- Maybe start with a separate "wedding planning" savings account rather than a full joint checking to keep wedding funds separate from regular expenses at first.

- Make sure to discuss expectations about who pays for what too - like will you each contribute 50% or will it depend on who earns more? Get on same page there.

- Trust is so important. Only do this if you feel 100% good about his money management skills and that he'll be transparent.

- You can always keep your personal accounts too so don't feel forced to fully combine finances yet if not ready.

If you don't trust him enough and you need to ask this question, perhaps you shouldn't be getting married.

I am getting married in April. I opened a joint savings account with my fiancée shortly after we got engaged. I earn much more than her so our contributions are not equal but I trust her absolutely.

If she shocked me and took the money in that account (approx. $20,000,) I would think that it was much cheaper to find out about her now, at that cost, than to get married and then learn an even more expensive lesson.

I suggest each of you having at least one individual account, plus a joint account that makes it convenient for shared expenses. How you go about contributing to the shared account, and what you use it for is up to you. But it can sure make things easier.

For multiple reasons, I do NOT recommend a shared account being your only account.

This is all part of a larger plan on how your financing will work out. If you've been dating a long time, maybe the finances have already arranged themselves and there is no need to change things. If you don't have an existing system and have not talked seriously about how it will be done after you are married, then you really need to discuss it now.

A partnership should have three accounts. The partners have their own account, and also a joint account for joint expenses. Personal funds are not subject to review by the other partner. Each contributes a negotiated amount to the joint account to cover joint expenses. Usually this includes housing, utilities, groceries, mutual entertainment, etc.

Does either of you have student loans? I just ask, because one client had a joint bank account from a very short marriage, and because payments were made from the joint account to the ex's student loan, it was deemed that the client had accepted responsibility for the loan. Since the ex left the country, the client was on the hook for about $100K in defaulted loans that she had not taken out or actually agreed to pay.

I think you should do it. Your planning your wedding, it's not like this is a stranger asking you for access to your money. Just put money in there for the wedding and keep other money separate. Worse case scenario, if he dose take money from it then you know before the wedding that he would do things like that and can get out of it a lot cheaper than finding out later and then having to go though divorce.

2) joint bank accounts are good for couples who share bills. You see who put in what money, and have all the bills available to compare.
3) “for our wedding” doesn’t seem to make any sense. Unless your both funding it yourselves, which goes back to #2.

I don't want marriage, for this very reason. Too many problems arise when it comes to financial stuff, in a marriage
