If that woman wears a head scarf only out of personal choice without any direct connection with any religion, yes, why not, as long as she doesn't mean for instance to show how good a muslim she is... In any case, I would never marry a too religious woman. I want someone able to think and choose for themselves.

Now, let's imagine me planning to marry a woman of muslim background. Of course I would prefer her not to wear any similar obvious religious symbol, but when visiting her family, is it wise to forbid her wearing the head scarf?

I assume you mean a traditional Muslim woman. I would if I really liked her and she liked me (I’m bi/pan but I hate having to explain this every time I answer a question like this) but it’s unlikely she would marry me. Lesbian relationships are forbidden in traditional Islam and marrying another woman is doubly forbidden. At least that’s my understanding.
