A Claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring in which a heart represents love, the crown stands for loyalty, and two clasped hands symbolize friendship.
there's an intresting tale behind the design. It was designed and crafted by a man called Richard Joyce who was taken into slavery by African Pirates. He was sold to a moorish gold smith where he learned the craft. 14 years later British King William 3rd demanded the Moors free all his subjects they had in slavery which included Richard Joyce, his slave master offered him half of the buisness and his daughters hand in marraige but instead he choose to return home taking the Claddagh ring he had made back to his home of Claddagh in Galway and became a successful goldsmith there. When he returned he met with his sweetheart who had be loyal to him the whole 14 years he was gone and he gave her the first ever Claddagh ring for her love and loyalty. That's so romantic. They can be gold or silver and some now come with stones. Before engagement rings became thing Claddagh rings were often used as promise rings.
