The Quran was revealed a very long time ago; back then, women had no right to work and were like slaves. Now, that's not the case; women are not obligated to do whatever men tell them to do. Because women used to be more emotional and more inclined to do whatever their husbands said, but nowadays women act more rationally, so I don't see anything wrong with that. But since there was no religious marriage ceremony, the marriage is considered invalid.
