When you say "you don't have to get me anything", what do you expect?

"You don't have to get me anything." When I say it I mean you really don't have to get me anything. However, I saw a movie and the girl told the guy he didn't need to get her anything. The guy didn't and the girl got upset. Now ignoring the movies, what do you expect when you say this to your boyfriend/girlfriend?

I never thought about it before but honestly even if I say that I probably still want a little something. LIke nothing big but a sweet little joke gift or something just to say he remembered. It's more romantic if he gets me something when he doesn't have to. Just think small, I would feel guilty if he went all out.

personally, I don't like getting anything, I find it awkward recieving gifts from anyone even my family (im weird that way) I perfer to give instead. so when I say "you don't have to get me anything" I mean don't get me anything.. but that's just me.

Don't get her anything overboard. It means she doesn't want anything expensive basically. If you wanna get her chocolate that's under like $5, go ahead. Or if you want, you could write a heartfelt letter + some cheapish (like a small container of Lindor Truffles or a $3 bar of Ghiradelli) chocolate

Idk- I do expect something but not something huge- when we say that that means "You better get something that you know I'll like, if not I'm not going to talk to you for a while." Pretty much we expect for you to know us well enough to get us something that we want or would like

Personally when I say this It mean I'm not expecting something expensive. It can be something small and simple but sometimes it really does mean I don't expect the person to get me anything.

okay so kinda tough because sometimes I genuinely do mean it to a significant other when I say that. but most times if a female or more particularly a gf is saying that to you it's probably out of courtesy or to not feel uncomfortable like saying they want something or seeming high strung or ungrateful. most often it's probably to be polite and not have someone feel obligated to do something. with that being said it's always okay to keep things simple.
