This gift can be material or spiritual as well.
My last ex and her family bought me a ticket home to go see my family for the holidays when I was in the military.
She and her family were going to Seattle to go see the rest of her relatives. When she asked me what my plans were for the holidays, I told her I was choosing to stay in the barracks and be there for those who could not make it home since my family had plans already. That was a lie because I was literally the only one in the barracks not going home on leave, but I did not want her worried about me while on her vacation and because she was a full-time college student with enough stress of her own.
However, we had a command function where loved ones were invited. One of my Sergeants was talking to her, just shooting the shit. Somehow the topic came up about what I was doing and my Sergeant knew I was the only one staying behind who lived in the barracks. The next time we had dinner with my ex's family, her father asked me how things were going. He then asked if I would like my Christmas gift a little early. I was not expecting a gift at all, most certainly not from him. He handed me a card and had me open it. In it was the plane ticket. My ex then explained how my chain of command was a little worried about me being alone but that none of them had money to help me out.

Years ago when we were really poor my wife bought me a riding lawnmower for father's day. It. Was really a big surprise.
She wasn’t directly given to me, but 8 years ago my mum adopted a cat. She’s been my source of light for 8 years. She has such a great personality, she never scratches or bites, she listens and understands what I say to her, and she’s calmed me down through many mental breakdowns, given me comfort and slept with me when I’m curled up in bed crying, and she talks to me lots everyday and helps to bring my mood up.
This year I moved out of home and was allowed to take her with me to my new house with my partner. I get to look forward to seeing her and my partner at home everyday. I appreciate her so much and she’s so much more than just a cat to me.
When my dad was dying in the hospital, he was in terrible condition. He looked absolutely miserable: all the tubes and buzzers hooked up to him.
But I asked him to smile for me, and for that single moment, in his eyes, it looked like there wasn't a single thing wrong in the world. That smile was just for me.
That is my lasting memory of my father--not him in the casket. My last memory of him is that smile.
That was the best gift ever given to me.
