What sorts of gifts should I give my friend, who’s asked for simpler gifts?

I grew up with a rich family; and I assumed everyone else got the great stuff I got; and that it’s important to give extravagant gifts to family and friends. So I only recently learnt that that’s not normal for most people and that most people want simple gifts. What does that mean I should give her for her birthdays and xmases? Is a purple cubic zirconia ring appropriate for a birthday gift? Worth $20? Or some cultured lavender pearls, also for $20?

Stuff like that is nicely thoughtful but not too extravagant. You want her to know you listened and aren't still going over the top after she said keep it low key. Jewelry is usually for more special occasions. Save that for her birthday next year once you get to know her tastes better. This shows you respect what she said about preferring simple gifts. For example, my gym buddy seemed to like my grip strengthener, and he mentioned not having one. So, I took a mental note and bought him one for Christmas. It was only $30, but he was really happy about it.
