I specifically have in mind that truly baffling (to me) modern phenomenon known as "credit card debt". Whatever happened to the concepts of living within one's means, of spending less than you earn, and putting off purchases until you can actually afford them?

You should of made this a poll. I was extremely financially irresponsible a few years ago being a compulsive gambler. I used to be semi wealthy through hard legitimate work (no handouts, no trust funds, etc.). But gambling almost killed me.

But I took responsibility for my actions. I joined a anon group and got clean 2 years ago. I blamed nobody but myself for the mess I got into.

I did have horrible external influences that drove me to seek unhealthy escapes. I do have a very strong impetus to make more money since men are held to a much higher standard on that (I wanted to get rich). They really are. But besides all those outside negative influences I took responsibility for my actions.

I have about half my debt paid off and I am working my ass of to get all taken care of. I took no handouts, no bail outs, filed no bankruptcies, etc. I am not “special” just because I breathe air. No.

I f*cking hate people who think they are entitled to money just for existing. It’s not only unfair to people who actually work hard but it hurts those freeloaders because it makes them dependent and weak. I also really hate the “intersectional” argument for reparations. It won’t make things better but only worse.

However I am proud to say that even though I made a mess I also have agency and ability to rectify it on my own.

Agreed. If financial irresponsibility caused you to be in poverty, that's your own doing and your fault. You have no legitimate reason to complain about the situation you created. Your personal wellbeing and security is not an option, it is your responsibility. I don't even own a credit card because I don't believe in the concept of credit. Nor have I ever applied for, or needed a loan. Because of this, I have never been "in debt" to anyone or any entity. I save my money for the things I need and I live within my means in a responsible, realistic and practical manner.

Financial responsibility is all about personal responsibility and not spending beyond your means. Sadly, consumerism and living beyond one's means has become a disease in our society. A disease that will eventually contribute to the collapse of entire economies because fewer and fewer people in today's culture care about being responsible. Just as long as they have the latest phone in their pocket, a warehouse full of clothes and a brand new car in the driveway, that's all that matters.

So, just keep charging away with your card, get yourself yet another loan and eat a big bowl of strawberry ice cream! Everything will be fine!

Even your post is financially ignorant though. But it's not your fault, 99% of people are financially illiterate.

In reality, one could go into millions of dollars of debt and be perfectly fine. And they do. Because money and credit and finance works like that.

It's not just that you need to live "within your means." What people TRULY need is to be educated in finance and basic economics.

Take a look at professional sports players who make millions. Or let's say, rappers:.

They spend all their money and go broke. They don't invest. They don't save. They don't utilize the economy to make themselves more money.

The more money you have the easier it is to multiply it.

But most people are ignorant of the most basic things.

Sure "live within your means" but that is merely the tip of the ice berg.

There's a reason why they don't reach us that shit in school. They want us to remain ignorant and poor.

I agree, if your irresponsible your going to pay the price. However, if someone is forced to just to survive then that does not count. The economy is particularly brutal right now for those who are on the bottom. Many people have been duped in degree's that will not pay themselves back, that is also irresponsible but unfortunately for them everyone said it was the right thing to do.

I know many people that have 20 or 30 thousand dollars in credit card debt. There is over 1.1 trillion dollars in credit card debt. Since Biden took office the average American family has lost over $7000 a year. Between higher prices for everything and the crushing inflation a lot of people have to use credit cards to live. The question is, what happens when people start to default on that debt?

In my case I inherited being broke from my irresponsible loser parents and at 29 I am still building up my independent financial money-printing machine with Swing Trading.

I was so broke, that I have starved between 15 - 23 years and I even collapsed from starvation in my teenage years.

Credit debt is one thing, but I can't stand the people who complain to apply for college or go on shopping sprees then complain about how they don't have enough money, or how hard it is to work and study. Like no one's forcing you to do all those things

Depends what you consider a financial necessity. For example if a 5 dollar cup of coffee each morning is necessity to you, then you deserve poverty yes. But some people are born into poverty, we're never taught a way out, and have a STEEP uphill climb if they try. Most people it'll still take most if not all of thier life to build economic security.
