I don’t have much money and I have 7 friends to buy birthday gifts for and now I have a boyfriend. I intend to keep my word that they get $50 from me this year (two of them); but I was thinking that I could save $80 a year if I cut back on close friends’ birthday and Christmas gifts and keep the gift costs at $25-$30, money for a cheaper lunch or dinner. I’m just sick of never having any savings for myself or my retirement.

I suggest keeping gifts small if you absolutely must exchange gifts. Spend only what you can afford after you have put aside the money you need to save for yourself. I made a deal with friends many years ago that we will not exchange gifts and it works perfectly.

That's about how much I'll spend on gifts for people. I try to stay around $30 and won't go over $50. If I find something that they really like for $50 I may make it a two event gift. My sister was born about a month (to the day) before Christmas and my mom and girlfriend were born in the first half of January, so I usually buy two gifts together for them. Therefore a gift that is too expensive for one event will cover both their birthday and Christmas.
